Club nights are held on Tuesday evenings from September/October to March at Charlestown Swim Centre at 6:45pm.
Club nights are for all ages, levels and abilities. If you can swim 25m, you can race at swim club!
Our littlest swimmers start off in D Grade and swim 25m races. Lots of encouragement is given, it is a great place for young kids to learn to dive, swim fast and have lots of fun! As swimmers times improve, they are moved up the grades.
Charlestown Swim Club welcomes swimmers of all abilities, including multi class swimmers.
A family orientated swim club, we have many parents who also compete at club night – you are never too old to race and have fun!
Every club night consists of 3 races. The first race is freestyle, the second race is one of the form strokes (breaststroke, backstroke, butterfly) and the third race is a fun novelty race such as relay, kick, medley.
The club night schedule is available on the website. Every effort will be made to follow the events as listed, however, the program of events may be changed if required by a decision of the committee members.
Club night races are run in grades to allow swimmers to be competing against other swimmers of similar level. Each swimmer will be allocated a grade for each swimming stroke. Gradings are determined by previously recorded times at Club Nights or the Club Championships.
For more information, see the Grades page.
Marshalling is when we organise the swimmers into their heats, ready to take the blocks. Each grade is called to the marshalling area, we check to make sure the swimmer is here and then the swimmer is given a lane. The swimmers stand behind the cone that corresponds to their lane, ready to move over to the blocks when told.
Points for each club night swim are awarded to each swimmer based on their race time. The points are summed up over the season and awards given out at the club presentation night.
The points are awarded as follows:
| Disqualified swim | 0 |
| More than 1 second slower than best time | 1 |
| Up to and including 1 second slower than best time, ie. 0-1 sec slower | 2 |
| Equal to best time | 3 |
| Up to and including 1 second faster than best time, ie. 0-1 sec faster | 4 |
| More than 1 second and up to and including 2 seconds faster than best time, ie. 1-2 sec faster | 5 |
| More than 2 seconds faster than best time | 6 |
A BBQ runs on most club nights, offering a casual and tasty option for dinner while bringing the club community together. The BBQ is entirely volunteer-run, and we rely on the help of our club members to keep it going. Everything you need is supplied — all we ask is for two families each night to cook and serve. Volunteering is a simple way to contribute and helps make the season enjoyable for everyone. Please consider signing up to help out throughout the season!
